Commissions

Commissions are something special. They are a time stamp - a piece of evidence of your time on this earth to pass down through the generations. An oil painting is both timeless and designed to last for multiple generations. It’s one of the few things that you can acquire that will never age or go out of date.

Emma has taken and executed commissions for subject matter as varied as a depiction of Valhalla to a series of time stamp paintings to celebrate the anniversary of an industrial enterprise. She has completed multiple portraits, of people as well as of pets, and several yachts.

how does it work?

A commissioned oil painting is something very special.

The process starts with a meeting - either in person or over Zoom or WhatsApp - where we discuss what you would like to see as an end result. We will talk about the size and subject of the painting, roughly how long it should take to complete, and how much it will cost. There is no obligation attached to this and Emma is very easy to talk to.

“I am absolutely thrilled with your painting of our yacht! You have managed to capture the essence of sailing Blue Belle in a way that leaves me in awe every time I gaze upon it.
(...)
I am immensely grateful to you for your talent and skill in bringing our beautiful old girl to life on canvas. This painting holds a special place in our hearts and I am sure we will cherish it for years to come. It’s more than just a painting; it’s a work of art that captures the soul of our yacht and is a wonderful memento of the adventures we have had with her over the last few years.
— James C, owner, SV Blue Belle

If you decide to proceed, Emma will send you a contract to sign and a request for a 30% deposit to cover materials and initial costs.

The rest of the process of creation leads from there. A commissioned painting is something extremely meaningful. It is the perfect way to commemorate a significant milestone, a particular achievement, or a very special moment or person in your life. It is also something that you can hand on down the generations and will never go out of style…

In the meantime, here are some more examples…

Farr 50 ‘Carioca’ arriving in St Lucia after crossing with the ARC Rally.

‘Rounding Cape Horn’

This was a surprise present from a client to his girlfriend, to celebrate her circumnavigation on board SV Sterna; a participant in the Ocean Globe Race in 2022-23, using only 1980s technology. No phones, only cassette players…and no modern navigation technology. The subject is an extraordinary young woman who was only 22 when she took part…

Needless to say, there were no reference photos to copy for this painting, so I had to work from a very few photos of the boat and of the subject herself. It was hard - but no doubt not as hard as the sailing itself!

Commissioned painting of Vazon Beach, Guernsey

The brief for this painting was to capture the spirit of the family’s favourite beach on the island of Guernsey in the Channel Islands. This is where the family spends its happiest times together, enjoying the beach and the water in the long summer holidays, after school and work, walking the dogs in all weathers.

I travelled to Guernsey twice for this painting: once to make the reference sketches and take hundreds of photos, and also to see where the painting would hang so that I could take the lighting of the location into consideration; later, I delivered the painting by hand. I prefer to do this if I can - that way I can make 100% sure that it arrives safely without drama. It’s also always wonderful to see the client see the painting live for the first time.

Has this got you thinking?
